Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center
Completed in 1996, this 43,000 square foot city-block sized community center provides neighborhood services including classrooms for the Head Start Program, WIC Health Services, adult education classrooms, a senior activity center, a soup kitchen, food pantry, 39 senior apartments, childcare facilities and administrative spaces for staff. A portion of the former Indianapolis Public School 49, including the gymnasium, was incorporated into the new addition.
A portion of the limestone detailing was retained as a gateway to the central courtyard gathering space, which is for use by both children and seniors.
This project was the recipient of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful's 1999 Merit Award for Architecture and a 2000 Indiana Concrete and Masonry Association Award.
